Almost Heaven: Birds, Nature, and Culinary Adventures in West Virginia

May 18 - 25, 2025

Leader: Mollee Brown

When the trees leaf out in the temperate forests of Appalachia, magic seeps into all the senses of the curious mind where bird and nature life abounds. The Almost Heaven tour spends a week immersing ourselves in the lush hills, hollers, streams, and meadows of West Virginia seeking the rich mix of breeding and migrant birds and other exciting flora and fauna with incredible food and drink along the way.

Join us on this captivating journey in the heart of West Virginia, where we focus on two main areas around New River National Park and Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Birds will be in their brightest colors and full song on their territories at this confluence of southern and northern woodland breeders. Plus, throughout our time in the field, we’ll likely encounter mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, and enjoy orchids, carnivorous plants, and plentiful wildflowers. In Chill Mode, we’ll take our time to fully immerse ourselves in each location we visit, and take advantage of a slow pace to delight in sightings big and small.

We’ll focus on two main areas: New River National Park - our nation’s newest national park, named after what’s actually a very old river - and Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, an expansive high-elevation wetland ecosystem. This convergence will provide us with opportunities for a combination of southeast US breeding birds like Swainson’s, Kentucky, and Yellow-throated Warblers and White-eyed Vireo; northern and western mountain breeding birds including Golden-winged and Mourning Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, Winter Wren, and Swainson’s Thrush; and prairie species such as Henslow’s and Grasshopper Sparrow and Bobolink. Warblers will be the stars of the show, and we can expect 30+ species throughout our tour.

But our tour isn't just about birding; it's a holistic exploration of West Virginia's natural and cultural treasures. We’ll indulge in a culinary adventure sampling a wide range of fantastic gastronomy, from farm-to-table delights to local specialties. We’ll experience the rhythms of live music that echo through the mountain valleys and savor the flavors of handcrafted brews and spirits at small breweries and distilleries, each with a commitment to conservation in unique ways. After fulfilling days of birding and exploration, we retreat to incredibly comfortable cabin accommodations that will make you never want to leave this Mountain State paradise.

Whether you are looking for lifers or simply want to enjoy this wonderful place and time of year, you’ll find a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This tour is designed to cater to individuals of all birding backgrounds and skill levels, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the wonder of birding in a supportive and non-intimidating environment. The only requirement is that you enjoy birds and nature! Join lifelong West Virginian and expert bird guide Mollee Brown for an unforgettable birding and cultural experience in the heart of Appalachia.

Who cooks for you? In addition to deep exploration of the area’s birds, mammals, herps, insects, and plants, we’re going to eat at some of the most fantastic and unique restaurants and drinking establishments in the Mountain State throughout this tour. Some have delicious inspired tasting menus, some are holes in the wall with family recipes that have been around for generations, and all are darn good. Highlights throughout our week will include:

Pies & Pints
Secret Sandwich Society
The Forks
Fishhawk Acres
Hellbender Burritos
Modern Homestead
The Freefolk Brewery
Still Hollow Spirits
Purple Fiddle

Every place we visit will have vegetarian options, too, and the dress code is casual. Plus, we’ll have West Virginia roasted and certified Bird Friendly coffee from Cherry River Roasting Company stocked throughout our tour!
