New Jersey
Avian Wonders of Winter
A quick winter getaway to coastal New Jersey offers a bevy of winter waterfowl, and chance for owls, scarce sparrows and more. After an arrival night in Philadelphia, we spend parts of 5 days birding coastal New Jersey based in the beach town of Ocean City, in northern Cape May county.
Harlequin Duck at Barnegat Light
Better known as a popular summer beach spot, after the crowds have dissipated avian treasures abound here in winter along the shores, beaches, marshes, and agricultural areas. Each hosts a wonderful array of winter birds. From the birding Mecca that is Cape May, to famous Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, to Barnegat Light State Park, and the meadows and fallow fields of Salem and Cumberland counties, there are always interesting birds to see as well as some sweet photo opps to boot.
Jetty ducks such as scoters, Common Eider, and Harlequin Duck are among the birds we’ll pursue, while we should also get close encounters with the dapper Long-tailed Duck and sometimes see displaying Red-breasted Mergansers. The windswept sand dunes and beaches typically hold frosty “Ipswich” Savannah Sparrows, or if we are lucky the great white beast of the north, the Snowy Owl.
