Welcome to the Darien Province, what is thought by some to be one of the planet’s last frontiers. Sprawling and rugged with vast and untouched beauty, this far eastern province of Panama is sparsely populated and stands-out, bursting with an authentic multicultural signature and a feel of being off the beaten path. The thriving biodiversity ignites wonder and a feeling of expedition and mystery, and has attracted the attention of birders, biologists, and anthropologists from around the world, eager to experience this wild and wondrous region.

This 5-night tour following our main tour of central and western Panama will give you the big picture view of the culture, geography, and biodiversity of this unique country, and is a region of Panama unlike all others we’ll have visited.  A highlight for this tour is the search for Panama’s national bird, one of the planet’s largest birds of prey: the Harpy Eagle. This quest for the Harpy takes us on memorable excursions on a river and into the heart of dense tropical forest, all in hopes of catching a glimpse of this very special bird. While the regal eagle is the star, brilliant birdlife abounds along the trip, and chances to see several species of monkey, and other charismatic wildlife is a draw. The days on either side of the Harpy quest will offer stop-and-go birding from the van at some quiet, and relatively untouched, locations, plus a river trip in a dug-out canoe, as we seek out some of the specialty birds and mammals of this wild and wonderful region.
